Two games, a handful of simple rules, and drills that burn them in. Ten minutes a day and you'll walk onto the floor knowing exactly what to do โ€” and which casino traps to walk right past.

Blackjack Track

The plan: make perfect play automatic, fast enough for a real table, and learn to refuse every trap the casino dangles. That's how you keep the edge razor-thin.

Texas Hold'em Track

In poker you're not fighting the house โ€” you're fighting tourists who play too many hands. Play fewer, bet them harder, read the board and the people, and the money flows your way.

The Vegas Cheat Sheet

Everything the drills teach, on one screen. Screenshot this before your trip.

โ™  Blackjack โ€” Playing

  • Dealer 2โ€“6 = bust card. Stand on any 12+. Let the dealer bust.
  • Dealer 7โ€“A = strong. Hit until you reach hard 17.
  • Always split aces & 8s. Never split 10s & 5s.
  • Double 11 always; double 10 vs dealer 2โ€“9.
  • Soft hands (Ace counts as 11): hit soft 17 or less, stand soft 18+ (hit soft 18 vs 9/10/A).
  • Exception: hit hard 12 vs a dealer 2 or 3.

โ™ฆ Blackjack โ€” Table smarts

  • Only sit at 3:2 tables. "Blackjack pays 6:5" costs more than everything strategy saves you.
  • Never take insurance or "even money." Same trap, different outfit.
  • Skip every side bet (21+3, Perfect Pairs, Lucky Ladies). House edges of 3โ€“8%.
  • Flat bet, fixed budget. Bet size never follows a loss โ€” cards have no memory.
  • Prefer "dealer stands on all 17s" and a hand-shuffled shoe over a shuffle machine (fewer hands per hour = smaller losses).

โ™ฅ Hold'em โ€” Which hands

  • Monsters (AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK): raise from any seat.
  • Strong (TT, 99, AQ, AJ suited, KQ suited): raise.
  • Speculative (small pairs, suited aces, suited connectors): play only in late position, cheaply.
  • Everything else: fold. Folding ~75% of hands is winning poker.
  • Late position = acting last = information = money.

โ™ฃ Hold'em โ€” Bet sizing

  • Big hand โ†’ big bet (โ…” to full pot). Tourists call; make them pay.
  • Draws: call only small bets (about โ…“ pot or less). Fold to big ones.
  • Missed the flop? Check and fold to pressure. No hero calls.
  • Don't slowplay. Vegas players call too much โ€” value bet instead.
  • Raise ~3ร— the big blind preflop; add 1ร— per caller in front of you.

โ™  Hold'em โ€” Quick math

  • Rule of 4 & 2: count your outs, then outs ร— 4 on the flop (ร— 2 on the turn) โ‰ˆ your % to hit.
  • Flush draw = 9 outs (~36% by the river).
  • Open-ended straight = 8 outs (~32%).
  • Gutshot = 4 outs (~16%). Two overcards = 6 outs (~24%).
  • Pair on board or 3 to a flush out there? Discount your outs โ€” some may already lose.

โ™ฃ Hold'em โ€” People & manners

  • Calling station: value bet relentlessly, never bluff.
  • Nit (super tight): when they raise, believe them and fold.
  • Maniac: call down lighter, let them bluff into you.
  • Say "raise" before chips move โ€” multi-motion bets are string bets and get rolled back to a call.
  • One big chip tossed in silence = a call, not a raise. Buy in ~100 big blinds. Tip ~$1 on won pots.
Reality check: perfect blackjack play at a good 3:2 table shrinks the house edge to under 1% โ€” the cheapest entertainment in the casino, and you'll win plenty of sessions, but the house keeps a thin long-run edge. Poker is different: you play against people, and tight-aggressive play is a genuine long-term winner at low-stakes Vegas tables. Either way, set a session budget before you sit down and treat it as the price of the fun.
